Sanny O. wrote on Nov 2, 2008: “Lee, your book has been lying on our table, and I read it again recently. It is delightful!! The story will appeal to kids, grandparents, and teach them a bit as a bonus! Especially in your AZ venue, it should sell — good luck!”
- An Elementary School Reading Specialist wrote on Nov 2, 2008: I enjoyed reading your book. You seem to have created a nice balance between facts and moving the story along. I also like the photographs you’ve included inside the cover.
- What a lovely, lovely children’s book. (I learned so much about the Cactus family) The text was wonderful—and you kept me in suspense waiting to see the dancing cactus. The paintings were fresh and a joy to see. I plan to show this book around to others. Thank you, Lewis D.

- Emily York, author of “Lindsey’s Desert Surprise” & “Sarah’s Desert Surprise” responds to Great Grandpa on June 28th: Great Grandpa, I am so happy your great grandchildren enjoyed “Lindsey’s Desert Surprise.” But I’m even more happy that you are reading to your great grandchildren. You are really a “great” grandpa. The next book is “Sarah’s Desert Surprise” which is about the cacti in the desert. Following that will be “T.J.’s Desert Surprise” which is about the snakes and other critters of the desert. Keep watching this site for more news.
- A delighted reader wrote on June 28th: My great grandchildren loved the book, and enjoyed reading it. I think is it wonderful, as well as being beautifully done. Will there be another book like it?
- Emily York, author of “Lindsey’s Desert Surprise” & “Sarah’s Desert Surprise” responds to Namesake on June 15, 2008: Hi Namesake, I am so glad you love the book. Keep looking at the web site. I will be adding things to it from time to time. I hope to have Sarah’s book out soon.
- The Book’s Namesake wrote on June 12, 2008: I love the books you have written. The books are well presented. One thing that I have noticed is that the deer in the painting is more story-book-like which attracts young readers. From The Book’s Namesake.
- Emily York, author of “Lindsey’s Desert Surprise” & “Sarah’s Desert Surprise” responds to Mary Stokrocki on May 23, 2008: This is another desert surprise. Rain in May! The fourth book in the Desert Surprise Series will be a story about water in the desert.
- Mary Stokrocki, illustrator for “Lindsey’s Desert Surprise” & “Sarah’s Desert Surprise” wrote on May 22, 2008: Well, the Desert really got a bathing today! Incredible thunderstorm—unseasonable downpour of rain & hail today (May 22, 2008). It really cooled things off and helped to prevent fires. Very refreshing! Pretty quiet.

Today we repeated the Ecology Lesson to Draw your Favorite Creature in its Desert Environment at Thunder Mountain Middle School in Apache Junction. We repeated the motivation of reading our story and showing the related illustrations and asking students preliminary questions. Many students don’t know what ecology means and those that do consider it study of plants, They enjoyed the story and started planning their own illustration. Students had many good ideas for their drawings. Their Art Teacher, Tina Harschmann finished the lesson.

We also noted that students tended to make triangle mountains in a row, but we reminded them that in Arizona the mountains are more squared (mesa). Stokrocki noted that girls tend to be more decorative with their images, such as swirling clouds or patterned cactus, than the boys, who value action.
